Gene Kawaratani has an advisory relationship with Entrepia, pursuant to which Mr. Kawaratani will assist Entrepia with analyzing prospective investments and locating investment opportunities for the Fund. Entrepia will make all final determinations as to investments in portfolio companies. Mr. Kawaratani also serves as a member of the investment committees of Fund I and II, but is not on the investment committee for Fund III. Mr. Kawaratani has been a Founder and Managing Partner of Entrepia and is currently transitioning into a new Senior Executive role at Sojitz Corporation, Japan-based conglomerate with fiscal year revenues of $57.7 billion.
Previously, Mr. Kawaratani worked for Nissho Iwai Corporation and focused on business development and investment in the communications industry. During his tenure at Nissho Iwai, he founded Atlux, a one-to-one database marketing company in Japan, in 1988. He served as the President and CEO of Atlux for six years and helped it grow into a ¥1.8 billion company with 60 employees. Mr. Kawaratani also served as a key member of a team that brought the $160 million sale of NEC’s optical communications facility to U.S. Telecom (now Sprint) in 1985. He was also responsible for Nissho Iwai’s successful $20 million investment in Pegaso PCS, a PCS mobile telephone company in Mexico, in 1998, when he was Nissho Iwai’s general manager of Media and Telecommunications. As Nissho Iwai’s media investment manager in Japan, he helped establish new businesses, including PerfecTV! (now SKY PerfecTV), Japan’s first DTH service provider.
Mr. Kawaratani has a law degree from Tokyo University and a Masters in Business Administration from Columbia University.
